Oxjam 2014_FINAL

Composer, vocalist and violinist Matt Howden’s one-man show comes back to London for an exclusive set part of this Oxjam 2014.
One voice, one violin, one simple loop-pedal. The songs are made live, layer upon layer of looped violin, beaten, plucked, bowed and thrashed! Matt has produced studio albums for various artists including The Mystery School and Sol Invictus; done string arrangements for artists such as The Walkabouts, Faith and the Muse, and L’Ame Immortelle; remixes for Emilie Autumn, Dope Stars and many more; music for film, television, dance companies, and art exhibitions; over 1,000 live appearances.
He will presenting tracks from his new acclaimed album ‘Each Divine Sparks’

Specifically choosing to use electric guitar and voice as their primary mediums, Matawan seek to portray an aural journey that often treads a fine line between brooding density and compelling ethereality.
The primary ideas raised by their compositions relate to the role that melody has within texture and how this relates to the listener.
Matawan is Gareth Chapman and Barclay Brennan

Fear of the Forest
True stories and dark folk tales of family poisonings, suicides, shipwrecks and mischievous Persian demons. Fronted by Kate Arnold (Lisa Knapp, Daemonia Nymphe) on vocals, hammered dulcimer and violin, with cello, hurdy-gurdy and Iranian and African percussion.

Lloyd James (Naevus)
Naevus was formed in London in 1998 by singer-songwriter Lloyd James. Often categorised as part of the ‘neo-folk’ genre, their music has also drawn critical comparison with acts such as Swans and Wire, whilst their oblique lyrical content sets them clearly apart from, their contemporaries. The musical style of Naevus can be described as ‘abstract expressionist’, with Lloyd’s deep and distinctive vocals offset against minimalist and often thunderous musical arrangements. This show is part of Lloyd James’ Dead Man Circling’ tour.

Othon + Marc Almond, Bird Radio, Ernesto Tomasini: Pineal

The Garage, 20-22 Highbury Corner, N5 1RD London

Thursday 19th June 2014, 7:00 pm

Othon Garage

Revolutionary songwriter, post-minimalist composer and PAN muzik founder, Othon, had no idea of the direction his music would take after participating in a series of mind-expanding ceremonies with the potent psychoactive ‘medicine’ Ayahuasca, in Brazil in 2012. In the midst of the jungle and under the hypnotic singing of indigenous shamans, he was overflowed with sensory information that would set the grounds for his emotionally charged and provocative new album. ‘Pineal’, which will be released on June 23rd by Strike Force Entertainment, is a multidimensional music journey that brings together Othon’s past and future, his edgy experimental songwriting, with his newly found love of awe-inspiring wilderness and ancient wisdom. As ‘Pineal’ swings from cinematic pop and fierce shamanic techno to jungle evoking down-tempo and violin driven electronica, Othon’s self-defined PAN muzik world that originated with his acclaimed second album, Impermanence, reaches unexpected new heights.

At The Garage, Othon together with Marc Almond, Bird Radio, Ernesto Tomasini, other special guests and a band, will present for the first time material from his new album, which honors and celebrates altered states of consciousness.

This is a Kaparte Promotions event.

Translations (feat. Württemberg Chamber Orchestra, Anna Zassimova, Ernesto Tomasini, Lore Lixenberg)

Posted in Uncategorized on June 4, 2014 by Kaparte

An evening exploring ‘translations’ from literature to music in London’s finest concert hall, featuring new work from composer Adam Donen.

Thursday 5 June at the Cadogan Hall,  Sloane Terrace, Belgravia, London

Tickets at http://www.cadoganhall.com/event/wurttemberg-chamber-orchestra-heilbronn-140605 – buy them now – it’s reserved seating.

The centrepiece of the evening, The Bernhard Suite, is a 55 minute orchestral collaboration between Donen & The Cure’s Roger O’Donnell based on the work of novelist and playwright Thomas Bernhard. Its widely lauded premiere took place in Germany last year, and it will be performed by the world renowned Württemberg Chamber Orchestra (“Breathtakingly brilliant! – Die Welt) on their first UK visit, joined by Russian soloist Anna Zassimova.

Poems After Lorca, inspired by Federico Garcia Lorca, is a new song cycle by Donen, performed by Ernesto Tomasini, a legendary singer with a 4 octave range, awarded His Excellency in Italy for his work in theatre and experimental music.

Also on the bill: the world premiere of Spengler’s Homage à Mallarmé, sung by French soprano Lore Lixenberg, and works by Catoire and Roslaves performed by Zassimova.

The Infinite Three were formed in late 2009 by Daniel Knowler and Robert Allen after the demise of their previous group Leisur Hive, with assistance from Mr Sam McLaughlin, Mr Den Liberator and other individuals.

In 2012, R.Allen left and was replaced by Mr Paul Middleton (Cindytalk / GOD). Over the Summer of 2013 this new line up locked themselves in a shed, lit a candle for the ancestors and pummelled their way through several new songs; repeating them endlessly until they no longer knew who they were or why they were there. The intense heat and humidity only adding to the surreal sensation of collectively grappling with some immense mentally retarded beast. The new single, ‘Bone Star‘ is taken from these sessions, which will be released as the band’s second album in 2014.

ADAM DONEN – ‘FALSE BAY ECHOES’ ALBUMThe journey following Donen’s Vampires (2010) was an strange but beautiful one, encompassing classical suites, operas and theatre, and leaving Donen one of Europe’s most in-demand living composers (among other events, his first symphony premieres next year in Russell Square with 190 musicians, and his Bernhard Suite comes to London’s Cadogan Hall this June).

But now he’s back to the real business: songs.

False Bay Echoes was recorded over 3 years in Cape Town, Berlin, Bavaria and London. It moves from disquieting spoken word to Sinatra-esque croons to the bloody rock ‘n roll Donen used to play with Alexandria Quartet. It’s a violent, schizophrenic work, not unlike Tom Waits’ Rain Dogs, and it’s produced by Donen’s longtime collaborator, Grammy nominated Robert Harder (Brian Eno, David Byrne).

The album’s 50+ instruments include metal chains and smashed plates alongside opera singers, orchestra, Paul Love’s musical saw and Donen’s trademark growl.

The launch performance will feature a number of very special guests.

Raf and O AKA Raf Mantelli and Richard Smith (O) unveil their second album ‘Time Machine’ on Telephone Records.
The compact group from South East London have been garnering widespread acclaim in the UK and all over Europe since the 2008 release of their first 10” ‘Has The Air Gone Walking?’ in collaboration with Graham Dids Gagarin (Nico, Pere Ubu) followed by their debut album ‘A Giant In The Snow’. Press described them as ‘Indietronic delicacy’ (Mixmag), ‘Emotively intense’ (Subba Cultcha), Bewitching (Raveline, Germany).
Early 2012 onwards, saw the two piece band airing a completely new set of original material; exciting shows highlighted magnetic performances, a unique sound-world channeled via their no compromise live ethic.
They have performed extensively in arts and renowned venues, underground clubs and UK Festivals, supporting amongst others, legendary Faust, Alabama 3 and Little Annie Bandez with Larsen at Cafe OTO.

Raf and O’s new album, ‘Time Machine’, presents the unique songwriting and vocals of Raf Mantelli, that have been referred to as ‘haunting, sensual and bewitching’ alongside the soundworld created by Raf and Richard Smith (O). They fuse electro/ acoustic drums, self-made triggers, pads, samplers, vocals, synths and acoustic guitar to startling effect.

Building on the reputation of their first album described as ‘Really excellently knitted experimental and cinematographic world’ (De-Bug Germany) whilst ‘They display outright pop mastery’ (Flux Magazine), the two piece band employ the same set up for live performances. The songs are a concoction of emotional journeys, time travel and surreal dreams featuring eerie, magnetic vocals, gentle, at times frenetic dark guitar picking, contrasting with washes of warm synthesizers and challenged by a hybrid of electro/ acoustic drums, repetitions and glitches. The eponymous ‘Time Machine’ encapsulates the sound described; it projects future possibilities and questions of the present, while ‘Saturated Dreams’ focuses onto a pre-packaged world ‘the shelf supplies one more of many more’. From the pastorally tripped infusion spy-themed world of ‘Mad and Brilliant’, the opening track, to the magical sound of ‘Strange’, which brings the album to a close.
In 2013, Raf and O launched their unique interpretation of David Bowie’s Lady Grinning Soul, also featured as a penultimate track in ‘Time Machine’; God Is The TV Zine described it as ‘Avant-bizarre’. Mike Garson, Bowie’s long-standing pianist and creative collaborator/ performer on the 1973 original, praised Raf and O’s minimal approach to this classic track after seeing a performance from December 2012. This led to the band being given the honour to open up proceedings on the legendary bandstand, hosting the remake of the Beckenham Free Festival, originally organised by David Bowie in 1969. Bowie gave his support again to Memory Of A Free Festival held on 15th September 2013. The minimal approach taken on ‘Lady Grinning Soul’ brings to the fore a conversation between Raf’s vocals and Richard’s analogue synth lines, transforming later into a quasi krautrock groove, before dissolving into a soup of sonic delights.
An eponymous EP is also released, with remixes by: Merlin & legendary Charles Hayward of This Heat fame, Kumo AKA Jono Podmore collaborator of Irmin Schmidt from Can and part of collective Metamono and Robert Logan electronic composer who has also contributed to Grace Jones latest releases.
‘Time Machine’ is a beautiful and imaginative album full of surprises and timeless songs steeped in sonics of past and future.
