HUGO RACE and TRUE SPIRIT, MADAM, ADAM DONEN @ THE LUMINAIRE

HUGO RACE & TRUE SPIRIT, MADAM, ADAM DONEN @ THE LUMINAIRE
Thursday 10 June

After the success of his solo appearance last November in London Hugo Race (ex Bad Seeds, Dirtmusic) returns in town for another exclusive UK date, this time with a full set with his band The True Spirit.

Melbourne-born multi-instrumentalist, performer and songwriter Hugo Race is an eclectic and prolific artist who has worked and lives in US, UK, France, Germany and Italy since 1988. He was a founding member of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds (1983) with whom he also worked in the final stages of the Birthday Party. He appears on five CDs of the Bad Seeds catalogue. Through the 90’s he released a series of nine records under his own name with the Berlin-based musical collective The True Spirit for the Normal and Glitterhouse label, culminating in ‘The Long Time Ago’ double Cd retrospective released in 2001. In 1999 Hugo set up his own production base Helidex. Recording in different situations and locations from Brussels to Bologna, The True Spirit have followed a personal musical vision in a series of mutating line-ups that fuse the boundaries between blues and electronica, described by London Sounds as ‘night music for the soul’ and by Melody Maker as ‘industrial-trance-blues’.

Hugo released his solo album ‘In Between Hemispheres’ at the end of 2009 on Gustaff Records, and received outstanding reviews from the press.

What’s so arresting about Between Hemispheres is its physicality. The ambience reminds of Eno and Harold Budd but elements of distortion suggest a man not afraid to get his shoes dirty. There’s a soiuled intensity about this album – both sweeping beauty and true grit.
– David Stubbs, Uncut –

At present he also collaborates with
US/Mali project Dirtmusic (Chris Eckman and Chris Brokaw) whose album ‘BKO’ is released in the UK on April 19.

Hugo Race and The True Spirit recent releases include ‘
53rd State’ and ‘Live in Wolow Jail’ (Glitterhouse).

Main support: Madam
Madam is the project of singer/songwriter/producer Sukie Smith, Her abum ‘In Case of Emergency’, out on Reveal Records in 2008, featured cameo appearances from fifteen other musicians including former Rockingbird Sean Reed and received outstanding reviews from the national press.
Last year she took the stage of the Queen Elizabeth Hall with Black Box Recorder and this year supported Nancy Elizabeth at the White Chapel Gallery.
Madam will play a full line up set including recent addition John Mercedo from Queen of Swords, whose soundscapes have become integral part of the cutting edge and nocturnal sound of the band.
‘Sukie Smith, better known as Madam, has a rare ability to combine the smoky, nocturnal atmospherics conjured by PJ Harvey or Portishead or the Velvet Underground with a pop sensibility’ – The Independent, One to Watch

Opening act: Adam Donen
Adam Donen is a young songwriter, folk musician and poet who has drawn flattering comparisons with Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan among others.
His debut album, Immortality, was released on the independent Walker & Orfing label on 1st March. It was engineered by Grammy nominated Robert Harder (Brian Eno, Herbie Hancock).

“Sounds like Leonard Cohen jamming with Tinderstick down Pete Doherty’s blood-spattered hovel”
“Comes with a spiritually informed belief that suggests a British, more literary contemporary to Josh Pearson… the album delivers in spades”
